The Role of the HSCL
The primary role of the HSCL coordinator, in accordance with the Teaching Council’s Code of Professional Conduct for Teachers, is to work with the adult(s) in a young person's life, in order to improve educational outcomes for them. The focus of the role is to improve the attendance, participation and retention of young people in the Irish educational system, by providing both universal and targeted supports.
The key tasks include:
- Work collaboratively with the key people and essential services to address issues which impinge on the school attendance, participation and retention of young people at risk of educational disadvantage and early school leaving.
- Design and implement programmes based on the needs of parents/guardians to prepare and support them as a resource to their own children and also to the wider school community.
- Engage with the planning, implementation and evaluation of the HSCL and DEIS schemes at whole-school level.
- Maintain a positive and co-operative working relationship with staff, students, parents/guardians and the wider school community.
